It tells voters who you are, why you are running, what experience fits the seat, one or two goals, the time you can give, and any conflicts. Below are five short candidate statement examples for HOA, club, PTA, nonprofit, and union elections, plus a free template and application form.

For the wider process, see the nominating committee’s guide to a fair election.

What to Include in a Candidate Statement

Voters skim, so put your reason for running in the first two sentences. Then cover:

Who you are: your name, the seat, and your tie to the group (owner, member, or parent since).

Why you are running: the problem or project that made you step up.

Relevant experience: budgets for treasurer, minutes for secretary.

One or two goals: specific, and within the board’s power.

Time you can give: meetings, committees, and response time.

Disclosures: any business or family tie to the group or its vendors, or “None”.

Closing: a plain request for the vote.

Short Candidate Statement Examples

Each candidacy statement example below is fictional and runs 80 to 150 words. Swap in your own facts and keep the structure.

HOA Board Candidate Statement Example

My name is [Name], and I have owned on [Street] since [year]. I schedule contractors for a living.

Our roof and paving projects start next year, and owners should see bids and timelines before the board decides. If elected, I would post a one-page summary after each board meeting and ask for two bids on any contract over [amount].

I have served on the landscaping committee for two years and can make every monthly meeting.

I have no business ties to the association or its vendors. I would appreciate your vote.

Club or Community Group Officer Example

I am [Name], and I have danced with [Collective Name] for four seasons. I am running for treasurer.

I keep the books for a small family business, and last season I ran the ticket table at our spring showcase.

As treasurer, I would share a one-page income and expense summary at every members’ meeting. I would move dues to one online payment link so nobody chases cash, and set aside part of each season’s dues for rent increases.

I can give about three hours a month plus meetings. Thank you for your vote.

PTA or Parent Council Candidate Statement Example

I am [Name], parent of a grade 2 student and a grade 5 student at [School Name]. I am running for secretary of the [PTA or parent council].

I have volunteered at the book fair for two years. I work as an office administrator, so clear minutes are part of my daily job.

If elected, I would send minutes to every family within a week of each meeting. I would also post a short recap for parents who cannot make evening meetings.

I can attend every meeting, in person or online. I would be glad to have your vote.

Nonprofit Board Candidate Statement Example

I am [Name], a member of [Organization Name] since [year] and a volunteer at our Saturday food distribution. I am running for an at-large board seat.

I have spent 12 years in commercial lending, reviewing budgets and leases, and would bring that to the finance committee.

My priorities are a reserve policy covering [number] months of operating costs and a yearly report showing members where program dollars go. I have served on one other volunteer board and know the time it takes.

I have no financial ties to the organization or its vendors. I would be honored to serve.

Union Local Officer Candidate Statement Example

I am [Name], a member of Local [number] for nine years and a steward at [Facility Name] for the last four. I am running for recording secretary.

Filing grievances taught me how much depends on accurate records. If elected, I would post approved minutes within 10 days of each meeting and keep a log of every motion members can review at the hall.

I would also push for meeting notices by text, since second and third shift rarely see the flyers.

I am not running on a slate. I would appreciate your vote on [election date].

How Long Should a Candidate Statement Be?

Set one limit in your election rules and send it with the deadline. Davis-Stirling, a California HOA law resource, notes that associations can limit statement length and some cap it at 500 words. Shorter usually reads better.

Format

Typical limit

Best for

Ballot bio

50 to 100 words

Online ballots that show a bio next to each name

Standard statement

150 to 300 words

Election packets, newsletters, and candidate pages

Full page

One typed page or 500 words

Contested HOA elections and states that set a page limit

Return an over-limit statement with a resubmission deadline. Do not trim it yourself.

What to Avoid in a Candidate Statement

Attacks on other candidates: run on your own record.

Promises one director cannot keep: boards decide as a group, so skip the fixed dues cut.

Claims with no proof: if you saved money, say where and how much.

Defamatory or profane content: Nevada HOA law bars it (see below).

Acronyms: new members may not know what ARC or CBA stands for.

Free Candidate Statement Template and Application Form

Part A, the application, confirms eligibility, consent to serve, and conflicts. HOAs and unions may also face statutes. Everywhere, give every candidate the same deadline and word limit, and print statements exactly as submitted.

HOA Rules in California and Nevada

Under California Civil Code 5105, an association’s election operating rules must give equal access to association media, newsletters, and websites to all candidates if any candidate gets that access during a campaign. The association may not edit or redact candidate content. It may add a statement that the candidate, not the association, is responsible for it.

Separately, Civil Code 5135 bars using association funds for campaign purposes. That includes featuring a candidate’s photo or name in an association communication within 30 days of an election. The ballot, ballot materials, and legally required communications are excepted.

In Nevada, NRS 116.31034 says the candidate informational statement must be no longer than a single typed page and must not contain defamatory, libelous, or profane information. It may be sent with the secret ballot or in a separate mailing.

Elsewhere, rules vary. Check your declaration and bylaws, and confirm with counsel. With HOA online voting in ElectionChamp, every statement appears on the ballot in the same format.

Union Locals

The U.S. Department of Labor’s FAQ on union officer elections covers private-sector and Postal Service unions under the LMRDA. A union must comply with all reasonable requests from a candidate to distribute campaign literature, at the candidate’s expense. If any candidate gets use of the membership list, all candidates must be offered it. Locals of state or local government employees should check state labor law.

How Candidate Statements Appear on Online Ballots

On paper, statements go on a separate sheet in the ballot packet, in ballot order. Online, they sit next to each name. In ElectionChamp, each candidate can have a photo and a bio on the ballot, and random candidate order stops anyone from always appearing first. Voters open the ballot with a single-use key sent by email or text, and ballots stay anonymous.

Long text is hard to read on a phone, so pair the full statement with a short ballot bio:

Owner since [year], retired bookkeeper, and landscaping committee member for two years. I will ask for two bids on major contracts and post a summary after every board meeting. I can attend every meeting. No conflicts to disclose.

For board elections with several seats, set “select up to” to the seat count. If you still need candidates, a ballot using the nominations and write-ins method lets members put names forward. Our guide to election ballot design covers layout. Setup and testing are free, and an election for 21 to 200 voters costs a flat $10.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a candidate statement include?

Include your name, the seat, and your tie to the group. Then cover why you are running, relevant experience, one or two goals, your time commitment, and any conflicts of interest. Close by asking for the vote.

How long should a candidate statement be?

Aim for 150 to 300 words, or 50 to 100 for a ballot bio. Some associations cap statements at 500 words, and Nevada caps HOA candidate statements at one typed page. Apply one limit to every candidate.

How do you start a candidate statement?

Open with your name, the seat, and how long you have been a member or owner. Put your main reason for running in the next sentence so voters who skim still see it.

Can the board edit a candidate statement?

In California, Civil Code 5105 says an HOA may not edit or redact candidate content, but may state that the candidate is responsible for it. Elsewhere, check your governing documents and counsel. Returning an over-limit statement for resubmission is safer than editing it.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"What should a candidate statement include?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Include your name, the seat, and your tie to the group.
