Here's exactly what happens when you create an election, whether you start from a template or a blank ballot.
Start: Name Your Election and Set the Rules
Give your election a name, add your organization and logo, and pick when voting opens and closes. The time zone is detected from your browser. On the same page, choose who can see results while voting is open, and how voters get their key: by email, by text message or handed out by you. Safe choices are selected for you, and each one explains what it does.
Build Your Ballot
Add a card for each position or question, and pick how members vote: Plurality, Nominations, Ranked or Cumulative. Type candidate names and press Enter, or paste a whole column. Add instructions for voters if you like, with bold, lists and links. A plain sentence explains how each question will be counted, and a phone preview shows what voters see as you type. Started from a template? Your sample ballot is already built, so just edit it.
Add Your Voters
Paste your member list from Excel or Google Sheets, or upload a CSV file and match its columns. Names are optional. A cell with a problem turns red and says why, and nothing is saved until every row is valid. The price updates as you go. Need weighted votes? Turn on Weighted ballots in Start and fill in the Weight column. When you launch, every voter gets a private 16-character key.
Check the Invitations
Your email and text message are written for you. Change the wording if you like, insert details such as the deadline with one click, and see the real email on a phone as you type. The voting link stays in every message. Email yourself a test to see it in your own inbox.
Review and Launch
One page sums up your ballot, voters, dates, privacy and invitations, with an Edit link for each. It also shows what happens next and the exact price. Anything left to finish is listed with a link to fix it. Press Launch election to pay and launch in one step. With up to 20 voters there is nothing to pay, so no card is needed. Invitations go out when voting opens, or right after launch if you chose Now.

No. You can start from a ready-made template: a pre-built election with a sample ballot designed for your type of organization, such as an HOA board election, nonprofit board election, union contract ratification, bylaw amendment, budget approval or officer elections. Pick a template, customize the candidates, questions and invitation, add your voters, and launch. You can still build from a blank ballot if you prefer.
No. If you can fill out a web form and paste from a spreadsheet, you can run an election on ElectionChamp. The setup is designed for non-technical users: board members, administrators and office managers, not IT departments.
Yes. Building and saving a draft is free. Preview the full ballot and try voting: nothing is counted. On the Invitations step, email yourself a test. You can also run a small election with up to 20 people for free, then copy it for the real vote. You pay only when you launch.
Paste rows from Excel or Google Sheets, or upload a CSV file. To upload an Excel file, save it as CSV first. If your first row has headings, the columns are matched by name. Each voter needs an email address or a phone number, depending on how you send invitations, unless you hand out their key yourself. Names are optional. If you hand out every key yourself and turn off the extra voter columns, you can skip the list and just enter how many keys you need. For weighted voting, turn on Weighted ballots in Start, then give each voter a whole-number weight. Every cell is checked, and nothing is saved until every row is valid.
Yes. You can add multiple ballot items, each with a different voting method. For example, use plurality voting for your board election and a simple approve/reject vote for a bylaw amendment, all in the same election.
Nothing is final until you launch. Once your draft is saved, open any step from the step bar at the top. The Launch page lists anything left to fix, with a link to the right step. After launch the setup is locked so every voter gets the same ballot, but you can still add voters with spare keys, send reminders and close voting early from the dashboard.
When voting opens, every voter on your list gets an email, a text message or both, with their personal voting link. If you chose Now, that happens right after you launch. Voters you give keys to get them from you. While voting is open, send a reminder to everyone who hasn't voted with one click: 1 reminder on a free election, or up to 5 on a paid one (at most one every 24 hours).
Yes, to launch or to email yourself a test. You can set up everything first. The Launch page has a Resend the email link if you need it.
Yes. On My elections, choose Make a copy. It copies the ballot, settings and invitation into a new draft. Tick Also copy the voter list to bring the voters too. Every voter gets a new key. If the old voting dates have passed, you pick new ones first.
